What are The Seven?
The Seven are Our Purpose, Our Value Chain, Our Communication Style, Our Navigator, Our Improvement Practice, Our Visible Learning and Our Rhythm. The Seven form one connected OAI system. Their strength comes from the way they support and influence one another, making alignment practical around Customer Value. They form one connected organisational system; they do not form a seven-step process.
Explore further ↗What is Operational Alignment?
Operational Alignment asks: Is the business connected around what matters? It connects Purpose, People, Process and Performance around Customer Value, so the different parts of the business support one another.
Explore further ↗What is Operational Integrity?
Operational Integrity asks: Does the business do what it says it will do? It is visible when everyday actions support the commitments, standards and values the business says matter.
Explore further ↗What does Dependability mean in OAI?
Dependability is the ability to keep our commitments repeatedly through the way the business works. Dependability earns trust. Trust strengthens loyalty. A dependable business cannot rely indefinitely on exceptional effort to achieve ordinary results.
Explore further ↗Where can I read more about OAI?
Every Business Exists to Serve Its Customer, by Leigh Grover, explores the thinking through practical workplace examples and introduces The OAI Model™. The book is currently at proof stage.
Explore further ↗What is the Five-Stage Connected Structure?
The five stages are Customer Value, The Core Four, The Seven, Dependability and Thriving. They describe a connected business, with Customer Value at the centre.
Explore further ↗Are the five stages a step-by-step programme?
The stages describe connections within a business. They help leaders consider the whole business and how its parts support one another, rather than treating the model as a one-way sequence.
Explore further ↗What does Thriving mean in OAI?
Thriving is success the business can sustain. Thriving grows from consistently serving the customer well. It gives the business the strength and capacity to sustain that value into the future. Success is the reward for serving the customer well.
Explore further ↗What is Our Purpose?
Our why, our shared direction and the promise we make. Our Purpose connects people and their contribution to shared Purpose and Customer Value. It helps teams understand why their work matters and who it ultimately serves.
Explore further ↗What is Our Value Chain?
Our Value Chain connects each contribution to the customer outcome. It makes internal customers and the transfer of work and information visible, so people can understand what the next person or team needs to succeed.
Explore further ↗What is Our Communication Style?
Our Communication Style creates shared understanding through communication suited to the audience. The Circle makes the communication loop visible: Sent → Received → Understood → Confirmed.
Explore further ↗What is Our Navigator?
Our Navigator keeps the Agreed Way clear and current: how work has been agreed, who owns it, where authority sits and what needs approval. Shared standards and guidance help us stay aligned and on course. People can raise evidence when the Agreed Way needs review or deliberate improvement.
Explore further ↗What is Our Improvement Practice?
Our Improvement Practice begins with understanding the current condition. We draw on evidence and the knowledge of people closest to the work, take deliberate steps to improve and learn from what happens. Recognised methods such as PDCA can support testing and reviewing a proposed improvement.
Explore further ↗What is Our Visible Learning?
People make mistakes. Hidden mistakes repeat. Visible mistakes teach. The individual owns their mistake. The learning can benefit the whole business. Mistakes are another form of learning. Our Visible Learning makes mistakes, near misses, rework, customer feedback and other useful experience visible so the business can learn and improve. People understand what happened, consider the conditions around the work and share what others can use.
Explore further ↗What is Our Rhythm?
Our Rhythm is a whole-of-business state of being, with people at its centre. It reflects how people, work, information, decisions, learning and support connect around shared Purpose and Customer Value. Different people and teams can work at different tempos while moving together, Aligned as One.
Explore further ↗Does OAI apply only to frontline work?
Knowledge lives throughout a business. People in offices, warehouses, support roles and operational teams all understand parts of the work. OAI brings those connections into view.
Explore further ↗Why look closely at repeated workarounds?
People can be remarkably resourceful when the system around them falls short. Their effort keeps work moving, yet it can also hide an underlying problem that still needs attention.
Explore further ↗Why involve people before a decision is settled?
People who understand the work bring knowledge that can shape a better decision. Consultation after a direction has been decided is different from giving people an opportunity to influence that direction.
Explore further ↗How do Performance and Customer Value connect?
Performance is what the business is actually doing, delivering and achieving. It helps us see whether the work is creating, enabling and protecting Customer Value. The evidence matters alongside the operating conditions that produced the result.

OBION is the home of The OAI Model™, bringing this thinking to business owners, leaders and teams through books, practical guidance and support. Its tagline is Purpose. Alignment. Integrity.
Explore further ↗Can we discuss using OAI in our business?
Yes. Contact OBION to discuss your business, what you are noticing and what you would like to understand or improve. We can explore how The OAI Model™ could support that work.
Explore further ↗Is the book available to buy?
The book is currently at proof stage. Purchasing details will be added to The Bookshelf when available.
Explore further ↗What is Operational Drift?
Operational Drift is the gradual and often subtle unmanaged movement away from the Agreed Way. The Agreed Way is how the business has agreed work should happen. It needs to remain clear, current, understood, workable and supported. Small adjustments and workarounds can become normal without being reviewed. Alignment helps make that movement visible, understand why it is happening and decide what needs attention. Deliberate, authorised improvement keeps the Agreed Way current.
Explore further ↗What is DRIFT?
DRIFT — Recognising Patterns of Operational Drift™ is an OAI tool that supports recognition of patterns. Operational Drift is the gradual and often subtle unmanaged movement away from the Agreed Way. The tool supports the definition; it does not replace it. A difference between the actual way and the Agreed Way needs to be understood before it is called Operational Drift.
Explore further ↗How does Our Visible Learning approach mistakes?
People make mistakes. Hidden mistakes repeat. Visible mistakes teach. Mistakes are another form of learning. The individual owns their mistake. The learning can benefit the whole business. Owning a mistake sits alongside understanding what happened, the conditions around the work and what can change. Sharing that learning helps others use it.
Explore further ↗What does OAI say about leadership accountability?
A leader may not own the solution, but they still own what happens next. Leaders help make sure a concern is understood, the right people are involved and agreed action is followed through.
